January 20, 2025 | From New Orleans Fire Department
On Monday, January 20, 2025, at 9:20 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to a reported dwelling fire in the 7800 block of Brevard Ave. in New Orleans East (NOE). The first of seven NOFD Fire Operations (Fire Ops) units, supported by twenty-one personnel, arrived at 7821 Brevard Ave. at 9:28 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters noticed heavy smoke and fire already extending through the roof near the home’s chimney. The two adult residents of the home notified firefighters that although they had escaped safely, they had several pet cats still trapped inside. Firefighters rescued approximately twelve cats from the home while simultaneously aggressively attacking the fire at its source, the home’s fireplace and living room.
This incident was placed under control at 9:49 a.m. It was determined that the fireplace was the cause of the fire. At some point after residents had lit their fireplace, portions of the chimney chute collapsed into the home. We want to reiterate this Cold Weather Fire Safety message concerning “Alternative Heating Sources” like fireplaces. Please use carefully. If your fireplace has not been inspected and cleaned by qualified professionals within the last year, DO NOT USE IT. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported during the mitigation of this incident.
