NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans proudly announces its recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation as a 2024 Tree City USA, honoring the city's commitment to planting, growing, and maintaining trees to benefit the community. New Orleans also received the Growth Award for exceeding the four Tree City USA standards, which include maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and hosting an Arbor Day celebration

On Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 a.m., the Department of Parks & Parkways will close the Interstate 10 on ramps of Tulane Avenue (I-10 East) and Orleans Avenue (I-10 West) to complete vegetation and tree pruning. Vehicular traffic will be detoured from the Tulane Avenue entrance further eastbound on North Claiborne Avenue to access the next on ramp at Dumaine Street. The detour on Orleans Avenue will direct traffic further west bound on South Claiborne Avenue to access the next on ramp past Gravier Street. This work will address trimming of intentionally planted trees and palms at these locations and removal of invasive vegetation to improve visibility for drivers

The City of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways today announced it is accepting applications for the 2024 Tree Planting Grant. The grant provides $225,000 in funding to nonprofit organizations in Orleans Parish for planting trees on public property throughout the City of New Orleans.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell today was joined by Director of Parks and Parkways Michael Karam, Director of Capital Projects Vincent Smith, Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols, District C Councilmember Freddie King and members of the Algiers Point Association, Algiers Economic Development Foundation and Algiers Neighborhood Presidents Council to celebrate the planting of 1,165 trees citywide. Today’s ribbon cutting was held at McDonogh Memorial Park in Algiers, the new home to three magnolias and one live oak.
