Mayor LaToya Cantrell

On May 7, 2018, LaToya Cantrell made history as New Orleans’ first woman mayor in its 300-year history. After that historic victory, Mayor Cantrell was inaugurated to a second term on January 10, 2022. Her passion for the City of Yes and her dedication to its residents remains stronger than ever.  

In her first term as Mayor, the Cantrell Administration was pivotal in negotiations to pass Fair Share legislation, securing $200M over five years for infrastructure, as well as getting voter approval in 2019 for a Short-Term Rental Visitors Tax and $500M Bond Authorization. In 2020, she also became laser-focused on protecting the public health and safety of the city’s residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as demonstrating first-hand her commitment to creating a more equitable and safer New Orleans for all residents. 

In 2021, the City of New Orleans, under Mayor Cantrell's leadership, achieved a critical milestone in selecting a developer for the former Six Flags site in New Orleans East, which has sat dormant for over 16 years as a result of Hurricane Katrina. This symbolized the administration's larger approach to leveraging City-owned assets and creating a more equitable and vibrant economy for all New Orleans residents and businesses. 

As she begins her second term, Mayor Cantrell remains focused on the issues of public safety, infrastructure, affordable housing and improving the quality of life for all New Orleans residents.

    Traffic Advisory: Temporary I-10 on Ramp Closures At Tulane Avenue (Eastbound) and Orleans Avenue (Westbound)

    On Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 a.m., the Department of Parks & Parkways will close the Interstate 10 on ramps of Tulane Avenue (I-10 East) and Orleans Avenue (I-10 West) to complete vegetation and tree pruning. Vehicular traffic will be detoured from the Tulane Avenue entrance further eastbound on North Claiborne Avenue to access the next on ramp at Dumaine Street. The detour on Orleans Avenue will direct traffic further west bound on South Claiborne Avenue to access the next on ramp past Gravier Street. This work will address trimming of intentionally planted trees and palms at these locations and removal of invasive vegetation to improve visibility for drivers

    Healthy Homes Administration to Hold Informational Webinars for Final Registration Phase

    NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans approaches the final phase of the Healthy Home Program. Landlords of 1–3-unit properties operating in Orleans Parish are reminded to apply for the Healthy Homes Certificate of Compliance on January 1, 2025. Certification is a requirement of the Healthy Homes Ordinance.

    DeSaix Boulevard Bridge Reopens Following Major Infrastructure Improvements DeSaix Bridge

    NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works (DPW) is pleased to announce the reopening of the DeSaix Boulevard Bridge and the completion of associated improvements along the 1700 and 1800 blocks of Moss Street. The bridge, which crosses Bayou St. John, has reopened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, providing improved connectivity for the area. Pedestrian access to the Wisner Bridge has also been restored.
