Volunteer Program

The New Orleans EMS Volunteer program allows volunteers to work alongside of New Orleans EMS employees providing patient care to the visitors and citizens of New Orleans.  Formally known as the VIGOR program, VIGOR is the acronym for Volunteer in Government of Responsibility.  The Volunteer Program is often a stepping stone for potential employees. 

Prerequisites

All Volunteers must complete a orientation class and possess the following credentials and certifications:

  • Valid National Registry Certification as an EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic;
  • Valid Louisiana State Bureau of EMS EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic License
  • Valid AHA BLS card
  • Paramedics must also have a valid ACLS card
  • Valid Louisiana Driver's License, Louisiana ID, or other Government issued ID card

Requirements

Volunteers are required to ride along on at least one 12 hour shift every two months to remain an active status.  When riding along with New Orleans EMS, Volunteers are expected to follow all New Orleans EMS policy and procedures. Volunteers are allowed to assist in supervised patient care. They are also able to attend all in house training.

The Volunteer orientation class is held at least two times each year. To sign up for a Volunteer orientation class, please complete the form below. Once the form is complete you will be placed in a database and will be emailed once the next Volunteer orientation class is scheduled.
