Bike Network Planning

The City is embarking on a city-wide bike network planning initiative under the Moving New Orleans Bikes project. Find out more information about the planning effort here, and find out more about our existing bike network at DPW's page here. 

Bike Registration Regulations

Registering a personally owned bicycle is encouraged but not required. The Department of Safety and Permits administers the bike tag program for a $5 fee through authorized bike registration stations. To find out more about the program, and where you can register your bicycle visit their website.

Bike Share Program, Blue Bikes

The City of New Orleans, in partnership with the local non-profit Blue Krewe, relauched Blue Bikes on August 23, 2021 with a new fleet of over 500 pedal-assist e-bikes.  Residents and visitors can access bike share by downloading the Blue Bikes Nola app and select from the Monthy membership, the Blue Bikes for All membership, or Pay-As-You-Go options.  Learn more below or at www.bluebikesnola.com

Complete Streets Program

In 2011, the New Orleans City Council passed the New Orleans Complete Streets Ordinance, which calls for establishing an advisory committee to oversee implementation and progress of the Complete Streets Program. The goal of the ordinance is “to accommodate and encourage travel for all users in a balanced, responsible and equitable manner consistent with, and supportive of, the surrounding community.” 

The ordinance also calls for establishing a Complete Streets Advisory Committee which includes representatives from key City agencies and three, one-year positions for representatives of local transportation advocacy organizations.

The first informal meeting of Complete Streets Advisory Committee was held in January of 2014. 

The City is currently working on institutionalizing Complete Streets initiatives. Check back in soon for more updated information.

New Links: Reimagining our Transit Network

The Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), Jefferson Transit (JeT) and the City of New Orleans has completed the New Links project, an 18-month project to study regional transit and develop recommendations for a transit network redesign with the goal of improving the frequency, reliability, and connectivity of public transit in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes.  In February 2021, the New Links project team released the final recommendations for a redesigned regional transit network.
