Historic Algiers Almshouse to Immediately Begin Full Renovation Into 52 Affordable Senior Apartments

HRI Communities (HRIC) today announced the financial closing for the renovation phase of the Touro Shakspeare redevelopment, marking a major milestone in the full rehabilitation of the long-vacant historic almshouse in Algiers. The $26 million renovation follows completion of the City-funded stabilization scope finalized in September 2025.

GRAND SLAM STAR COCO GAUFF SURPRISES PLAYERS AT REOPENING OF REFURBISHED TENNIS COURTS IN NEW ORLEANS EAST

Two-time Grand Slam singles champion Coco Gauff surprised a local tennis clinic in New Orleans East on Monday, visiting the tennis facility that was recently refurbished in her honor. 

The 10 courts at Joe Brown Park were refurbished earlier this year as part of the US Open Legacy Initiative, which was launched in recognition of Gauff’s 2023 US Open women’s singles title. As part of the initiative, the USTA pledged $3 million–equivalent to Gauff’s prize money in 2023–to refurbish public tennis courts across the country. The New Orleans project was hand-picked by the Gauff family due to the family’s extensive ties to the city.

City Provides Thanksgiving and Bayou Classic Weekend Public Safety Preparations

The City of New Orleans will be hosting the 52nd Annual Bayou Classic Presented by Procter & Gamble from Nov. 27 - 29. Preparations are underway for hosting the Annual Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade, Fan Fest, Beats Before Battle, Greek Show & Battle of the Bands presented by the Louisiana Office of Tourism, culminating with the annual classic football game. ORLEANS PARISH DROP-OFF LOCATION AVAILABLE FOR THANKSGIVING COOKING OIL DISPOSAL

The City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the Office of Resilience & Sustainability, is encouraging Orleans Parish residents to dispose of used cooking oil responsibly this holiday season. Improper disposal of cooking oil, such as pouring it down the drain, can cause significant damage to the City’s sewer infrastructure, leading to costly repairs and environmental hazards.
