City, Sewerage and Water Board Resume Work in Areas within 1,500 Feet of the Mississippi River Levees
NEW ORLEANS – Today, the City and Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) announced that work can now resume on various construction projects and regular maintenance activities that were on hold due to the high water levels in the Mississippi River.
“We are excited to get back to work on critical infrastructure improvements and maintenance activities which had been delayed by high water levels,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “I want to thank our residents for their continued patience--- and to thank the East and West Levee Authorities, and the Army Corps, for their steadfast management of this flood fight.”
“We’re grateful for the patience of how our residents live with the Mississippi,” Executive Director Ghassan Korban said. “And we’ll work to tackle these delayed repairs as swiftly as possible.”
Max Pave The Department of Public Works (DPW) and SWBNO continue to make the roads safer for motorists and residents by paving 860 open roadway utility cuts across the city as part of the $6.5 million Max Pave Program. To date, 800 work orders have been completed. Work resumed last week on the approximately 60 delayed work orders and will be complete by the end of September.
Spanish Plaza Renovations The Capital Projects Administration has been renovating Spanish Plaza with new pavers, lighting, street furnishings and a new fountain. Work on the new fountain, which was delayed, will resume within 30 day and wrap up this fall.
$2 billion Joint Infrastructure (JIRR) Program DPW and SWBNO are working together to implement an unprecedented program to restore our damaged infrastructure. Work on the $3.7 million Westbank Group A project, first of two planned FEMA-funded construction projects on the Westbank, was delayed in the Algiers Point neighborhood. During the delay, the contractor worked in other areas of the project. Work in Algiers Point is anticipated to resume in the October time frame. Work on portions of the $3.9 million St. Claude Group A project – Homer Plessy Way, Burgundy Street and Poland Avenue – were delayed. During the delay, the contractor worked in other areas of the project. Work is anticipated to resume on Homer Plessy Way, Burgundy Street and Poland Avenue in the September time frame.
NOLA 311 and SWBNO 52-WATER The City and SWBNO have begun addressing maintenance work orders generated through 311 and 52-WATER that were delayed. SWBNO is working to address its cataloged work in these areas and it will restart its regular maintenance and repair schedules as resources dictate. For updates on SWBNO work orders, call 52-WATER.
Bourbon Phase 2 Project On May 20, the City/SWBNO received a waiver allowing work to resume on the Bourbon Phase 2 project. The project is roughly 70 percent complete; the roadway has been fully reconstructed between St. Louis and Orleans streets (500-750 blocks) with upsized drainage, a better sewer system, new sidewalks and new, smoother pavement. Additionally, the lighting and security have been upgraded between St. Louis and St. Peter streets. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric has completed upgrades to their services in the 500-800 blocks.
The $9.5 million cost-shared project, which is anticipated to run through fall 2019, was designed by Mott McDonald, LLC and is being constructed by Hard Rock Construction, LLC.
