NOFD Dispatches Two-Alarm to Riverwalk Outlet Mall

May 05, 2017

On Friday, May 5, 2017 at 6:05 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) received an alarm notification indicating a possible fire in the Riverwalk Outlet Mall, located at 500 Port of New Orleans.  The first NOFD company arrived on the scene at 6:12 a.m. and immediately began to investigate possible sources of smoke that had permeated the mall’s Food Court area. After determining the source of the smoke was the mall’s HVAC system, a second alarm was called for at 6:17 a.m.  During the response to this incident, a separate alarm was dispatched to investigate an alarm at 1 Poydras, near the mall’s Spanish Plaza entrance at 6:11 a.m.  Firefighters quickly realized the two alarms were related and all responding companies were placed on the second-alarm related to the building’s HVAC system.  Seventeen NOFD companies supported by fifty-one Fire Operations personnel were used to comb through the mall’s ventilation system, investigate every air conditioning unit and to check inside the buildings walls using thermal imaging cameras for a possible source of the smoke.  After a thorough investigation, this incident was placed under control at 8:09 a.m.  The source of the smoke was determined to be an air conditioning unit servicing the mall’s Food Court.  There were no injuries reported during the mitigation of this incident.
