The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission:

  • Plans, supervises, and conducts a comprehensive and coordinated program of cultural and physical recreation;
  • Promotes cooperative planning with public and private entities concerned with recreation; and
  • Manages, maintains, and operates recreational facilities owned or operated by the city.



Thirteen members.

  • The Mayor;
  • The first deputy mayor-chief administrative officer;
  • The deputy mayor of operations;
  • Chair of the City Council's youth and recreation committee but if the committee has more than one chairperson, then the co-chairs of the committee will rotate on May 1 of each year;
  • The superintendent of the Recovery School District;
  • The chairman of the Orleans Parish School Board;
  • The chairman of the City Planning Commission;
  • The chairman of the New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation; and
  • The Mayor appoints five members who are domiciled in different districts in the City with approval of the City Council.

Term Length

Five years; Ex-officio members serve terms concurrent with time in respective office.
