Purpose

The Orleans Parish Hospital Service District – District A was created to deliver a full service hospital to New Orleans East. Urgent care services began in July 2011 on the hospital campus as a first step towards building a full hospital, which will reopen in 2013. This represents the first access to 24 hour, 7 day a week care for this community since Hurricane Katrina.

Composition

Thirteen members.

  • The Mayor appoints seven members. Three of these appointments must be from a list of nominees submitted by the councilmember, state representative, and state senator whose district encompasses all or the greater portion of the area in which the district is located;
  • The Mayor appoints one member who is a consumer;
  • The chancellor of the LSU-Health Sciences Center School of Medicine or designee;
  • The chancellor of the Tulane University School of Medicine or designee;
  • The president of the New Orleans Medical Association or designee;
  • The president of the Orleans Parish Medical Society or designee; and
  • The director of the City of New Orleans Department of Health.
