NOHD Internship Program

Are you currently a student interested in public health? Are you looking to make an impact in your community? Come be a part of the future of public health as a New Orleans Health Department intern. Every semester, NOHD offers internship opportunities across a range of program and topic areas. Students placed in these internships make meaningful contributions to the NOHD mission through hands-on experiential learning and come away prepared to take the next step in their career.

Internship Opportunities

All Fall 2024 NOHD internship opportunities have been filled at this time. Please check back in October for Spring openings!

Fill out an Internship Application Form to apply for up to three of the available internship opportunities. Completed applications with a current résumé and writing sample are required to be considered for an interview.

Please note, all internship opportunities marked with an asterisk are a part of the NOHD Health Equity in Internships Initiative (HEII) which aims to ensure that students from all academic institutions have the opportunity to complete internships at NOHD. All students are encouraged to apply, however, priority will be given to applicants from schools who have been historically underrepresented. Prioritized schools for the 2024-2025 academic year are as follows: Delgado Community College, Dillard University, Louisiana State University, Loyola University of New Orleans, Southern University of New Orleans, University of Holy Cross, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University. Prioritization will be reassessed prior to the Fall semester every academic year.

NOHD Intern Experience

Here's what previous students have to say about their experience in the program:

"This internship has given me so much valuable insight and useful skills that have left me better equipped for entering the workforce in the future. I will definitely apply the project management skills even on my college campus as I work in club leadership and as I begin the process of writing a thesis. Additionally, I plan to continue engaging with many of the community partners I worked with at NOHD on campus."

"I enjoyed being able to work for an organization that is doing work that not a lot of people may be familiar with. It was very rewarding to see that the work I was doing was having an impact in the New Orleans community."

"My experience at NOHD was engaging and challenged me to really learn and improve. Prior to my internship I did not have much experience working on multi-organizational projects, so getting the chance to work with multiple large community partners was an enriching experience."

"This experience not only allowed me to fulfill my school's graduation requirements but also deepened my understanding of a field that I was unaware existed within our community. The supportive and collaborative team made me feel valued, and I appreciated the inclusive work environment. I could see myself fitting in well with the culture, as it aligns with my passion for advocacy and helping others."
